A Secret

François, a solitary, imaginative child, invents a brother for himself as well as the story of his parents’ past. On his fifteenth birthday, he discovers a dark family secret that ties his family’s history to the Holocaust and shatters his illusions forever. Adapted from Philippe Grimbert’s celebrated novel, Memory. Sunday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. Speaker: Professor Annette Insdorf is Director of Undergraduate Film Studies at Columbia University and a Professor in the Graduate Film Division of the School of the Arts (for which she was Chair from l990-95). Dr. Insdorf is the author of Double Lives, Second Chances: The Cinema of Krzysztof Kieslowski; Francois Truffaut, a study of the French director's work; and Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust, whose updated third edition received the National Board of Review's William K. Everson Award in Film History. Her commentaries can be heard on numerous DVDs, including "Three Colors," and she has interviewed over one hundred film celebrities in her popular "Reel Pieces" series at the 92nd Street Y. Sunday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m.Speaker: Professor Annette Aronowicz, Robert F. and Patricia G. Cohn Weis Chair of Judaic Studies, Franklin and Marshall College Professor Aronowicz's research is in modern religious thought, with specific interest in French Jews. Her published work includes a translation and introduction of Emmanuel Levinas (Nine Talmudic Readings by Emmanuel Levinas), a book on Charles Peguy's portrait of Bernard-Lazare (Jews and Christians on Time and Eternity), and a series of articles on a group of Jewish Communists in Paris, centering mainly on the post World War II Yiddish playwright Haim Sloves.
