Machtat follows the life of Fatma and her two daughters, Najeh and Waffeh, who are wedding musicians, or "machtat," in Mahdia, a small city in Tunisia.  Filmed from the point of view of these three female wedding singers, the documentary explores issues of marriage and patriarchal rules in contemporary Tunisian society.

The screening will be followed by a discussion and a reception.

Sonia Ben Slama is a French-Tunisian documentary film maker.  She grew up in Paris where she studied art and cinema at the University Sorbonne-Nouvelle.  She is the director of Machtat (2023) and Maktouh (2015).
